. CPI - Charlottesville Photography Initiative

From the President's Desk

What is the best way to beat the heat this Summer? Why it is community outreach of course.

This Summer, we have had some great opportunities for CPI Supporters to get involved with their Charlottesville community and have some more upcoming events we would like to highlight.

In partnership with The Bridge PAI, The CPI provided six photographers for this year’s Southwood Project. The Southwood Project is a four day educational lab where students learn and practice photography and writing taught by community professionals. The students are comprised of of Albemarle County Public School students from Southwood Mobile Home Park and Westhaven Community. One of the four days saw students paired with professional photographers, writers and artists for a day-long visit to Darden Towe Park.

The goal of the Southwood Project is to utilize the mediums of writing and photography to capture the students individual experiences of visiting a working farm. This year was a great success with students learning, practicing, and effectively demonstrating advanced photography and writing techniques. The culmination of their efforts will be in the form of a book alongside a release party towards the end of September. Thank you to all of our volunteers who braved the heat and spent a day mentoring and working with this wonderful group of young adults.  CPI Supporters have another great chance to work with Southwood on Tuesday, August 16th. Gloria Rockhold, the community engagement manager for Albemarle County schools has asked us to be a part of their Southwood Festival, a festival to promote school attendance and participation in an underprivileged Charlottesville neighborhood. They have asked The CPI to setup a photo booth for families and provide event coverage. This promises to be a lot of fun and we hope to see some CPI Supporters out on the 16th.

To finish the Summer out, we’re proud to once again be a part of the third annual Splash for a Cure on Saturday, August 27th. The CPI has been a part of Splash since it’s inception and are excited to lend a hand to this amazing organization. The Ishan Gala Foundation was formed in September 2008 after the devastating loss of our angel Ishan to the relentless childhood cancer neuroblastoma. IGF is dedicated to the fight against pediatric cancer and the board has committed their efforts to help those in the fight and fund research initiatives essential to finding a cure. The imagery we produce helps to further their mission and aid in their advertising and fundraising efforts. Please join us on the 27th.

Stay cool for the rest of the summer and thank you for your ongoing support. Keep shooting!

DSLR Video Workshop - Sept 24/25 - Two Days - Saturday/Sunday, 9AM to 5PM  DSLR Video Workshop: Making the transition from still to video ‘isn't as easy at is seems.

Instructors: Jon-Phillip Sheridan & Gabriel DeLoach

More and more photographers own digital SLRs and point and shoots that are capable of making professional quality HD video. Many of these people use these new features casually without any knowledge of how to make a movie that can captivate an audience. Photographers have many skills that can be transferred to making movies, but the transition can be difficult because filmmaking has its own unique process that requires a whole new set of skills and planning: with a new medium comes new programs, work-flow and challenges.

This introductory workshop will teach you how to make a film with the simplest tools possible, just you, your camera and a laptop. We will teach you about the unique video capabilities of the DSLR, the basic building blocks of shooting for a movie and how to process and organize your files, as well as editing a very short film.

Topics covered include camera and program settings, shooting techniques, developing concepts for cinematic storytelling & reporting, and software editing tools.

TOOLS REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS:
-DSLR or Point & Shoot camera with HD video capability (720 or 1080p)
-Laptop (pc or mac)
-iMovie editing software for Mac or PC equivalent

Cost: $150.00 for two day event

Exposure Theory, Saturday, October 8, 2011, 1:00 PM  Have you always wanted to shoot on manual, but are a bit unsure of your abilities to turn that dial? Do you know how to make a correct exposure without the use of a meter? Want to build up some of your technical confidence?

Well, this is the class for you!

For the first hour (2 hours, total), we'll discus the fundamentals of exposure and and review a number of shooting strategies. This discussion will focus on the "exposure triangle" and students will have a comprehensive understanding of shutter speed, aperture and ISO before moving on. Following our discussion, participants will break off into small groups and demonstrate what they have learned.

Many of the concepts discussed will roll into the following Lighting Workshop and I hope you'll stick around for both events.

This class promises fast, fun and very informative. Please show early, bring your camera and any lens of your choosing. There is a lot of material to cover and I would like to ensure that everyone is on-time. I hope to see you Saturday!

Cost: $25.00

Lighting Workshop, Saturday, October 8, 2011, 3:30 PM   This 2-hour workshop will introduce students to the fundamentals of working with both on-camera and off-camera flash.

The Beginner Lighting Workshop curriculum is geared towards amateur photographers who have a basic understanding of their camera, and possibly a flash, but want to take their flash photography to the next level.

Beginner Lighting Workshop students are expected to: -Have a basic understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO/ASA/Speed -Know how to set and utilize their camera in Manual mode -Be able to set their flash to Manual

If you are unsure of your abilities in any of these areas, The Exposure Theory class held before this workshop is designed to improve your foundations.

The day will be broken out into three sections:

The first part will involve hands-on instruction on how to get consistent exposures with a hot shoe mounted flash. Students will have the opportunity to work with a different modifiers to attain the best possible exposure with a mounted flash.

The second area will focus on dismounting your flash from your camera and working through a variety of photos to include portraits, objects and interiors.

The final section of the workshop will have students chasing after a number of different "assignments" that will require the student to exercise the knowledge they gained throughout the day in group setting.

Despite how sterile this descriptions sounds...we like to have fun! So please come out and join us!
